📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Robert F. Kennedy Announces the Death of Martin Luther King Jr. in Indianapolis (1968)

Indianapolis was the site of one of the most well-known speeches by a presidential candidate. On April 4, 1968, senator Robert F. Kennedy gave a speech to a group of people in Indianapolis, where he announced that Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated in Memphis, Tenn.

Kennedy spoke at Notre Dame and Ball State earlier in the day, and was the first to publicly inform the audience in Indianapolis about King’s death. After the crowd screamed in disbelief, Kennedy spoke on the threat of disillusionment and divisiveness, and called to “replace the violence with an effort to understand with compassion and love.”

Though there was fear that the speech would lead to riots, Indianapolis had very little violence. It was one of the few American cities that had none in the wake of King’s death. Kennedy’s speech is credited with spreading King’s message, as well as keeping the peace in Indianapolis after the tragedy.

Hoosiers to Watch in the Final Four

That Braylon Mullins fella, the most popular college basketball player on the planet over the last week, is an Indiana kid, born and raised. The 2025 Greenfield-Central graduate didn’t just fly onto everyone’s radar with the 35-foot three-point shot heard ‘round the country, however. He was a McDonald’s All-American, Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year, and Indiana Mr. Basketball as a senior. He’s good, and he showed millions just how good last weekend. We’ll see what he’s got for an encore this weekend at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Mullins isn’t the only Indiana native in the Final Four. Find out who’s joining him. (Get Indiana)

WRTV Officially Acquired by Circle City Broadcasting LLC

News broke Wednesday that the $83 million deal had been finalized for Circle City Broadcasting LLC to acquire WRTV-TV 6 from Scripps Broadcasting Holdings LLC. Circle City Broadcasting LLC now owns three of the local stations — WRTV-TV 6, plus WISH-TV 8 and WNDY-TV 23. Sadly, the acquisition led to many WRTV-TV 6 employees, including reporters, anchors and meteorologists, among others, not being retained. (IBJ)

Pay a Visit to Potato Creek State Park

Our state parks expert Allison Martin shares her experience at Potato Creek State Park, where there are ospreys, opportunities for mountain biking, and a new lodge in the works. (Get Indiana)

Four Teams, One City

This weekend will be the ninth Men’s Final Four hosted by Indianapolis, and No. 10 isn’t too far down the road in 2029. UConn, Illinois, Arizona and Michigan make up an absolutely loaded group that has eight national titles between them. If you’re heading to downtown Indy for the games or just want to be around the madness, here’s where to stay, eat, park and more. (Get Indiana)

👏 4 Big wINs 👏

The IHSAA Boys Basketball State Finals were held this past Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and there was no shortage of drama throughout each game.

In Class 1A, Barr-Reeve secured its third state title in program history with a 50-37 win over Triton. And in 3A, Indianapolis Cathedral beat New Haven 71-61 for the program’s third state championship as well.

There were a couple of first-time champions in the other two classes.

In 2A, Parke Heritage led at the end of every quarter but needed a layup with under 10 seconds remaining to top Westview 57-56 for the school’s first state championship in any team sport.

And in 4A, Indiana Mr. Basketball frontrunner and Purdue commit Luke Ertel scored 26 points, snagged 10 rebounds, and piled up six assists in a 52-50 victory for Mt. Vernon (Fortville) over Crown Point, which had beaten the Marauders previously in December. Mt. Vernon (Fortville) trailed by 10 points at halftime. The state title is the fourth in school history.

🎙 On today’s show I sat down with my colleague Cheyne Reiter to preview Final Four weekend in downtown Indianapolis. At the end, we tried some sweet surprises from our friends at Glover’s Ice Cream.

We discuss why Indianapolis is an Elite March Madness host compared to other cities across the country. We then break down the four teams coming to Indy – UConn, Illinois, Michigan, and Arizona – highlighting each program’s Final Four history and key storylines, including Hoosier ties like UConn freshman Braylon Mullins who graduated from Greenfield-Central, and Illinois players Ben Humrichous from Tipton and Jake Davis from Indianapolis Cathedral, plus Michigan coach Dusty May’s Indiana roots.

Beyond the court, we highlight the many fan festivities, including free concerts featuring Twenty One Pilots, Zac Brown Band, Megan Moroney and Post Malone at the outdoor American Legion Mall, the Swish Arts and Culture Festival, Fan Fest, Tip-Off Tailgate and more.

The show concludes with our taste test of two new flavors from Glover’s Ice Cream: Hoosier Pothole and Indiana Sugar Cream Pie. They’ll be available across the state this summer!
