MONROE COUNTY AND ELLETTSVILLE HISTORY

Monroe County was founded in 1818 and named for James Monroe, who was the fifth President of the United States from 1817-25. Ellettsville was founded in 1837, incorporated in 1866, and named for its first merchant, Edward Ellett.

THE (LIME)STONE AGE

Ellettsville is in limestone country, and it has enough to share with the country. No, seriously. Its limestone can be seen in memorials, cathedrals, government buildings, libraries, churches and many other historic buildings across the U.S., and many local craftsmen have traveled the country to provide on-site work to those structures.

They aren’t afraid to show off the limestone locally, either. The half-mile Limestone Heritage Trail in downtown Ellettsville has artifacts and sculptures for walkers and bikers to enjoy before connecting to the Karst Farm Greenway Trail. If you head to the north side of town, you’ll come across limestone sculptures of Bigfoot, Yoda and an elephant, too. šŸŖØā›šŸ˜

Construction began on the reservoir in 1960, and it spans nearly 11,000 acres. It’s a hot spot for fishing, boating, camping and recreational activities throughout the year. šŸ›¶
