📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Siege of Fort Harrison (1812)

The first significant victory by the United States in the War of 1812 occurred at Fort Harrison, so let’s revisit that battle for This Week in Indiana History. An outnumbered U.S. regime defeated a Native American force of soldiers under the command of future U.S. President, Zachary Taylor.

Incredibly, when the Native Americans first attacked, General Taylor only had twenty soldiers under his command… and that group held on until reinforcements arrived! Now that is some Hoosier grit right there!

The Siege of Fort Harrison was the first land victory by the U.S. in the War of 1812, eventually becoming the catalyst to getting the British off our backs once and for all (and eventually allowing them to become our biggest international ally).

Now that it’s September, fall-like temperatures have arrived along with crisp air, leaves changing color, and days getting shorter. September also means the arrival of some of our favorite fall activities, including visits to apple orchards and pumpkin patches, navigating corn mazes and more.

Thanks to our friends at Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, here’s a list of apple orchards and pumpkin patches across the state to visit.

If you're a fan of ornate woodwork, grand staircases, and stories of Indiana’s most influential families, this road trip through the state’s most spectacular historic mansions is calling your name.

Many of these beautifully preserved estates — including homes of former presidents — are open for tours. We found six mansions to check out, starting in Madison and ending in Elkhart.

The dawn of another NFL season is upon us with America’s team (LOL, do they still call themselves that? Remember the ‘90s, Cowboys fans?) taking on the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles tonight to kick off the new campaign.

Once the dust settles in that NFC East rivalry, the itch will have been scratched — we’ll be full steam ahead toward the season opener for the Indianapolis Colts, who host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at 1 p.m. Here at Get Indiana, we’ll be tracking the highs of the 2025 Colts. Yes, you read that right… the highs.

According to a poll by The Athletic, Colts fans are the least optimistic of all fanbases heading into the upcoming NFL season. Why? Because quarterback Anthony Richardson hasn’t panned out? Insert Daniel Jones, often referred to as “Danny Dimes.” He came from the New York Giants where wins were at a premium, but he didn’t have a great offensive line to keep him upright.

Led by All-Pro left guard and fellow 2025 team captain Quenton Nelson, Jones now has an o-line that should buy him more time in the pocket. And his supporting cast isn’t too shabby either with Jonathan Taylor in the backfield, wideouts Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs, and 2025 first-round pick Tyler Warren at tight end.

Don’t sleep on Naptown. Don’t sleep on the 2025 Colts.

Chelsea Kopelman, founder of Keeping Up Local and a fun follow on her Instagram account Keeping Up In Carmel, was a recent guest on the Get IN. podcast and mentioned Roselli’s Pizzeria in Carmel as a hidden gem in Indiana.

Located at 106th Street and Michigan Road in Carmel, the family-owned and operated Roselli’s has been serving Chicago-style pizza in Carmel for the last 30 years. How good is it? Even Chicagoans know it by name.

Pro tip: Go for the pizza lunch buffet.

Many golf course clubhouses across the country are home to cleverly named establishments called the “19th Hole.” It’s where you belly up with friends to have a drink, bite to eat and recap the handful of memorable (and not so memorable) shots played during the round.

Inside the Pete Dye Clubhouse at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, however, is no ordinary 19th Hole. Insert Boilermaker Prime, home to prime steaks, wagyu, a raw bar, 450 wines and more.

It opened in April 2025 and already has over 100 Google reviews and 4.8 stars. Sounds like a birdie on the scorecard and in our business breakdown.

It may be the offseason for the Indiana Pacers, but the recovery from an Achilles tear for star guard Tyrese Haliburton is making headlines. Sure, he’s not expected to play at all during the 2025-26 season, but his return to 100% health for the following season would position the ‘Cers for another deep playoff run.

And look, he’s already shooting free throws! Get well soon, Tyrese. 👀
