📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜
The Revolutionary War is very much a celebrated occasion, as we would not have this country without it, but did you know that a major battle actually occurred in the greatest state of the Union? This week in Indiana History, we revisit the Battle of Vincennes.
I could go all day about the Battle of Vincennes but will keep it brief. George Rogers Clark, the general of the Virginia Militia, and the highest ranking Patriot officer during the frontier battles of the war, marched his army of just 170 militia to take the British post at Fort Sackville in Vincennes. He tricked the British General, Henry Hamilton, who had a much smaller but more experienced army, into thinking his militia was much bigger than they actually were.
They had small skirmishes over the next two days, but eventually Clark took the post for the Patriots (doing so incredibly with ZERO CASUALTIES), and took in 79 prisoners, including General Hamilton. The Siege of Fort Vincennes without a loss of human life ended up being Clark’s most significant military accomplishment, and he was known from that day forward as the “Conqueror of the Northwest.”

⚡ Hoosier Headlines ⚡
The Indianapolis International Airport is arguably the most travel-friendly airport in the entire country. Other than the anticipated busier holiday season, you can arrive, check your bag(s), get through security and be to your departure gate in approximately 15-30 minutes. Its efficiency is top of the class.
Last week, it was announced that Indianapolis International Airport will add a 253-room, seven-story Marriott Westin hotel to the west end of its terminal parking garage. Construction will begin later this year and is expected to be completed in late 2027. The best airport in America is about to get even better. ✈️🛏

Bedford native Clayton Anderson plans to open two bar-and-grill restaurants in Indianapolis this spring — Clayton’s Ripple Rodeo in Broad Ripple and Clayton’s Honky Tonk on the first floor of the Morrison Opera Place building. Patrons can expect good food, good times, and live music, of course. Once they open and I give them a visit, I know I’ll be Right Where I Belong. 🎸🍻

A rare total lunar eclipse is set to take place overnight on Thursday, March 13, into the wee hours of Friday, March 14, and will be North America’s only total lunar eclipse of 2025. A total lunar eclipse occurs when a full moon slips behind the umbra, or for the non-astronomers, the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, while the Earth, moon and sun are aligned. The full moon then appears as a “blood moon.”
Want to see it happen? Set your alarm for 1 a.m. on March 14, as the partial phase will begin at 1:09 a.m. EST. Totality doesn’t set in until 2:26 a.m. EST but will last for over an hour, considerably longer than last year’s total solar eclipse. 🌍🌕☀️

Last week we highlighted the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals and two of 224 state qualifiers — Crown Point’s Austin Reading and Bishop Chatard’s Sam Bustamante — who overcame adversity and punched their respective tickets to state. Let’s stick with the wrestling theme. Reading and Bustamante continued their state series run, with Reading securing the 5th place medal at 215 pounds and Bustamante ending his high school career with a 6th place finish at 144 pounds. Congratulations to both, who were among 112 wrestlers to leave with hardware!
The storyline of the 2025 IHSAA Wrestling State Finals? The pure dominance by Brownsburg High School, which brought 11 qualifiers to the tournament and had seven individual champions out of 14 weight classes. Its other placers included a runner-up, two thirds and a fourth, meaning all 11 wrestlers reached the semifinals at a minimum. The Bulldogs shattered the state record for tournament points scored with 243. Their 132-pounder Jake Hockaday, highlighted in the Instagram post below and a University of Nebraska commit, became the 11th wrestler in Indiana history to win four state titles, and he sealed the last one with a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. Gritty. Tough. Historic. A special shoutout also goes to Lowell’s Kameron Hazelett, who became the first freshman in Indiana history to win the heavyweight title.
