📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜
This week in Indiana history, the newly elected Abraham Lincoln gave a speech to thousands of people from a hotel balcony at the Bates House in Indianapolis. The speech occurred on the eve of his 52nd birthday on Feb. 11, 1861. Though not fully inaugurated yet (that didn’t happen until March 4 at that time), the president-elect talked about the importance of preserving the Union and the importance of coming together.
The speech and visit was part of a tour of the Union states that Lincoln went on shortly before his inauguration, with Indianapolis being his last of six stops in the Hoosier State. It was a special visit for Lincoln, who spent much of his childhood living in Indiana, returning to the state where he received much of his education to eventually become a lawyer and the 16th president of the United States.
