📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

WIBC Radio Begins in Indianapolis (1938)

WIBC radio is a major source of news and talk radio in central Indiana. On this week in Indiana History, we celebrate its beginnings dating all the way back to Oct. 30, 1938, when it first went on the air on 1050 AM as a 1000-watt daytime-only station.

Broadcasting to this day from 40 Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, WIBC transitioned from an AM signal to an FM dial (93.1) in 2007, which broadened its reach and modernized its signal.

If you listen to WIBC, you can expect a mix of programming, from local news to syndicated content. On weekday mornings, listeners can expect local hosts tackling regional and national news, followed by overnight hours by the widely listened to show called “Coast to Coast AM,” which delves into the supernatural and unexplained. Whatever your pleasure, WIBC has you covered over the air.

Once Halloween 2025 is done and gone on Friday, Fair Oaks Farms will dispose of its leftover pumpkins on Saturday, Nov. 1, in the most fun way possible — allowing visitors to smash them.

In addition to its annual Pumpkin Smash Bash, Fair Oaks Farms is the perfect weekend getaway for families any time of the year. Since opening in 2004, Fair Oaks Farm has expanded its transparency of agriculture with three farm adventures, orchards, and farm-to-table restaurants to enjoy. Plus, you can even book a room in a silo.

Here’s our full scoop on the agventure known as Fair Oaks Farms, located just west of I-65 between Lafayette and Chicago in Jasper County.

For those who enjoy birdwatching and connecting with nature, our state parks expert Allison Martin shared her learnings about birdwatching in Indiana. Many parks offer guided hikes, migration events, and nests for active viewing, along with opportunities to learn about any type of bird within Indiana’s many parks.

You can listen to Side Trail: Going Birdwatching IN the Parks on Apple or Spotify.

Allison also paid a visit to Prophetstown State Park, located northeast of Lafayette near Battle Ground. There are several trails to hike or bike, plus an aquatic center with slides, a pool, and lazy river. Prophetstown tells the story of how Indiana was impacted by the glaciers, water, fire, and human hands.

Ben Forrest, founder and CEO of Olio, was a recent guest on the Get IN. Podcast and mentioned the Reitz Bowl in Evansville as his hidden gem. Known today as one of the greatest football stadiums in the country, it was originally planned as a retaining wall for F.J. Reitz High School until a school member recommended it could serve as both. Fast forward to present day… the Reitz Bowl has been hosting football games for the last 107 years!

When the Get Indiana crew traveled to Evansville for the 104th Annual West Side Nut Club Fall Festival, we blocked off time to see the Reitz Bowl. It was even more incredible seeing it (and doing what the kids call “Bowl Busters”) in person. The next time you’re in Evansville, add it to the bucket list.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth or simply love nostalgia, then take a trip to the candy-coated time machine known as Schimpff’s Confectionery in downtown Jeffersonville in southern Indiana. Family-owned since 1891, Schimpff’s makes treats the old-fashioned way, including right in front of your eyes in Schimpff’s Candy Museum and demonstration area.

Next weekend on Nov. 7-8, there will be a citywide celebration in Jeffersonville because Schimpff’s was named “Best Candy Store in America” by USA Today, proving what Hoosiers have known all along — this candy shop is something special. The 4th generation family owners will also pass the torch to the family’s 5th generation! Incredible.

We need to answer last week’s question of “Is Indiana a football state?” As of now, it’s a resounding yes.

Behind yet another three-touchdown performance and 174 total yards by Jonathan Taylor, the Indianapolis Colts overwhelmed the Tennessee Titans 38-14 on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium, improving to 5-0 at home and elevating their NFL-best record to 7-1.

Taylor gave Indianapolis a 10-0 lead after one quarter of play with an 18-yard burst, and he was just getting started. On the Colts’ first play of the second half, he sliced through the defense before slipping two tackles along the sideline en route to an electrifying 80-yard touchdown run that made it 24-7. His final touch came on the second play of the fourth quarter when he went in motion, took a forward underhand flip and found paydirt for a 19-yard score, pushing the advantage to 38-7. Chants of “MVP!” rained down after all three scores.

Daniel Jones (21 of 29, 272 yards, 3 touchdowns) also found Michael Pittman Jr. (8 receptions, 95 yards, 1 touchdown) and Josh Downs (3 receptions, 39 yards, 1 touchdown) for scores, and led the Colts to their sixth game with 30-plus points this season.

Next up: at Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3), Sunday, 1 p.m. ET on CBS

On Saturday in Bloomington, No. 2 Indiana (8-0) took care of business and embarrassed UCLA (3-5) in a 56-6 win.

The Hoosiers rushed for 262 yards and four touchdowns, including 45 and a score from Fernando Mendoza who also completed 15 of 22 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns. Mendoza is now the betting favorite to win this year’s Heisman.

Next up: at Maryland (4-3), Saturday, 3:30 p.m. on CBS
