📅 FOUNDED
Parke County was organized in 1821 and formed out of Vigo County.
Parke County was named after Benjamin Parke, who was the Indiana Territory’s attorney general from 1804-08, colonel in the Battle of Tippecanoe in the War of 1812, a U.S. federal judge in Indiana after it attained statehood in 1816, and the first president of the Indiana Historical Society from 1830-35, among other notable duties.
Parke County is known as the “Covered Bridge Capital of the World” with 31 historic covered bridges throughout the county.
Its county seat is Rockville.
Its entire western border is the Wabash River.
Montezuma was settled in 1821 and formally established in 1823.
The origin behind the town’s name is still unknown, but Aztec emperors Montezuma I and Montezuma II may have been chosen due to the many Native Americans in the area.
🏥 MAIN INDUSTRIES: Manufacturing, Agriculture
Superior Hardwoods is one of the largest sawmills in Indiana and is a leading provider of Appalachian and Northern American hardwoods.

Wabash & Erie Canal
Montezuma acted as a popular shipping point during the early years of settlement, when the Wabash River was the great commercial highway of Parke County. In the late 1820s, Congress gave Indiana a grant encouraging the state to build the Wabash & Erie Canal to connect Fort Wayne to the Ohio River. At nearly 470 miles long and stretching from Toledo to Evansville, the Wabash & Erie Canal was the longest canal built in North America. Montezuma was the main port in Parke County, and remnants of the canal can be seen in Reeder Park.
The Wabash River also offers plenty of outdoor recreation, whether you want to go fishing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding or floating. In August 2025, a new fishing/boating dock was installed to provide easy access to the river. If you want to see incredible views of the river, cross the rail-trail B&O Walking Bridge.
Local Parks
Aztec Park is home of a beautiful Veteran’s Memorial to honor those who have served the United States. It also has a playground and the best baseball and softball fields in the area. Reeder Park also features a playground, sports courts, and campgrounds with water, power and a handicap accessible restrooms. Both parks host a variety of seasonal events like Easter egg hunts and trunk-or-treating during Halloween.
Open seven days a week from 7 a.m. until late evening, Reservation: A Riverfront Experience is the spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and date nights, all housed in a historic 1850s building. Steaks, seafood, seasoned fries, cheesecake and more.
If you’re looking to grab a quick bite or sweet treat, The Tasty Freeze is a classic ice cream shop offering options like pizza, burgers, salads, breadsticks, and, of course, ice cream! This shop has 4.4 stars on Google with over 450 reviews. Customers love their burgers, 24 flavors of ice cream and loaded fries.
For a nightcap, Road Hawgs is Montezuma’s small town bar where you can find ice cold beer, cocktails, seltzers, shoot pool and enjoy friendly service. They also serve bar grub, host live entertainment, have a 22-pound mug chug challenge that locals love, and are a biker-friendly establishment.
