Welcome to Get Indiana’s Weekly Newsletter

Hope you all had a great Labor Day & got to chill by the grill or hit the lake one last time while honoring those who work hard. Let’s get to this week’s newsletter!

☀️ This week’s INsights

  • 📊 Stat of the Day: Hoosier Hill - ever heard of it? This location is known as Indiana’s highest point. 🏔️ Next to a small dairy farm north of Richmond, it stands 1,257 feet above sea level. You can visit Hoosier Hill by car throughout the year. Once you reach the “summit,” you’ll find a picnic table, fire pit, and mailbox. Exciting!

  • This week in 1812 - The Siege of Fort Harrison kicks off in what we now call Terre Haute. In this battle, you've got the U.S. forces hanging in there, led by none other than future president Zachary Taylor. Now, this guy's only got like twenty comrades, and they're up against 600 Native Americans who are ready to throw down. But somehow, Taylor and his boys hold the line until backup finally shows up. This ends up being the first land win for the U.S. during the War of 1812. Not bad for a bunch of dudes who were probably just trying not to die. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hoosier Headlines

🎈🔥 Balloon Racin’ - this weekend, the skies over Hamilton County are gonna be full of hot air balloons for Jupiter Flights at Conner Prairie. This year, they've got 40 different hot air balloon teams coming in from all over the country.

In the mornings, the balloons are gonna be taking off and doing these competitions where the teams try to toss a bean bag as close as possible to a target on the ground. It’s like cornhole but, you know, from a hot air balloon. Then, after dark, you can get up close to these massive balloons and check them during the balloon glow. It’s gonna be a blast!

🍁 Fall is Coming 🍁 - Alright, so it’s September in Indiana, which means everyone’s starting to think about that sweet fall weather. You know, the kind where you can finally stop sweating just by stepping outside. And, of course, we’re all waiting for those fall colors to start popping. 🍂🍃

According to ExploreFall, we’re gonna start seeing some patchy colors around Indiana later this month. By mid-October, it’ll be medium color (whatever that means). But the real show, when everything’s looking all bright and brilliant, should hit by late October. So, get ready for those Instagram-worthy trees and start planning your Indiana fall hiking trip!
