Nancy Lincoln Dies (1818)

On Oct. 5, 1818, a young mother died in her family’s log cabin in Spencer County, Ind. She was 34 years old and died due to an outbreak of milk poisoning that was caused due to cattle grazing a poisonous white snakeroot plant. Life on the frontier was difficult, and the family had little access to medical care and doctors.

That woman was Nancy Lincoln, mother of Abraham Lincoln. She was remembered as highly intelligent, traits that she passed on to her children, including her son. Sadly, many in the area passed due to the illness.

Nancy was laid to rest on a wooded knoll near their homestead, in what is now Lincoln State Park. Though she died young, her legacy lived on due to her son publicly reflecting on the influence and morals that his mother gave him. She is most remembered for shaping who is perhaps the greatest president in American history.

The Get Indiana crew headed south this summer to Dubois County for four nights/five days that were jam-packed with awesome attractions, good eats, and great times.

A handful of bucket-listers for your visit? Butcher and Barrel, League Stadium, The Bungalow Bar, and the Monastery Immaculate Conception. And if you’re traveling this time of year, the fall leaves are sure to be changing color. For the full rundown of what’s happening in Dubois County, watch our YouTube guide below.

The latest state parks visit from our state parks expert Allison Martin was Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis. There are plenty of trails for walking, running and mountain biking, plus it’s a great spot to see wildlife.

You can hear about Allison’s full Fort Harrison State Park experience by listening on Apple or Spotify.

If you haven’t heard of the town of Hindostan, that’s because the promising future of it was cut short many moons ago. It was once the county seat of Martin County with nearly 1,200 residents, but a “Great Disease” — possibly yellow fever, cholera or malaria — swept through in 1828 and wiped away much of the population. Those who survived relocated and nature took its course from there, reclaiming much of the land.

The story of Hindostan still lives on today with the annual Hindostan Days. Held near the original site of Hindostan Falls, the festival features historical reenactments, local artisan booths, food vendors, live music, kids activities, pony rides and educational exhibits about early Indiana life.

Good timing, too. The fifth annual Hindostan Days is this Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Get Indiana team spent last weekend in South Bend and discovered a hidden gem that’s been open for less than two weeks. It’s called Salvation, occupying what was once a Salvation Army.

Salvation is dimly lit with a variety of high tables, lounge seating and an outdoor patio with a fireplace. On top of the atmosphere, bartender/mixologist Matt Lester has won awards for his drinks in the past, and you heard it from us — he served up the finest cocktails we’ve ever had.

Next time you’re in South Bend, put Salvation on the must-visit list.

Get IN. podcast guest Eddie Battista named Wasatch Lake in Poland — about an hour west of Indianapolis — as a hidden gem in Indiana. From cabin rentals to a quiet escape on the lake, we’re in come summer 2026.

While it wasn’t a series win and improbable ticket to the 2025 WNBA Finals, the Indiana Fever pushed the second-seeded Las Vegas Aces in a winner-take-all Game 5 on Tuesday night in Sin City, ultimately falling 107-98 in overtime.

In the heat of the series finale, Kelsey Mitchell — who had previously been named All-WNBA 1st Team — went down with severe cramping midway through the third quarter and never returned. At the time, the Fever trailed by four, and it seemed winning without their star would be next to impossible.

The Aces stretched their lead, but the Fever responded, as they’ve done all season long, chipping away until the score was knotted when the clock hit zero at the end of the fourth quarter.

The Fever then played overtime without yet another All-Star, Aliyah Boston, who fouled out with under one minute remaining in regulation. Las Vegas buried a series of threes to start overtime, and the Fever were finally put to bed.

It wasn’t the finish anybody wanted, but the future is bright. We’ll never forget the resiliency and fight of the 2025 Indiana Fever.

Love this home? Check it out during its open house from 1-3 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 4!
