š This Week in Indiana History š
Prohibition Begins in Indiana (1918)
On this week in Indiana History, we talk about what is almost single handedly seen as one of the WORST AMENDMENTS in the Constitution⦠Prohibition.
In 1918, Indiana banned the sale and possession of alcoholic beverages. They did so almost a year before the federal government did so with the passage of the eighteenth amendment which federally banned alcoholic beverages.
Prohibition was done due to the urging of the temperance movement. The reason behind this was the belief that men would go to work all day, come home, drink way too much, and then become violent and vulgar.
Eventually, prohibition ended with the passage of the 21st Amendment (yes, you CAN change amendments⦠theyāre called amendments), and now we can drink alcohol again! Hooray! Itās great considering Indiana has so many great breweries to choose from and try out!
One positive of this alcohol free period is this⦠NASCAR was created. And we all know how much we love our racing here in Indiana. Long story short, when alcohol became illegal, individuals had to soup up their cars to run the moonshine to different places. Eventually, they started racing them, creating the sport of stock car racing.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs played two games in their Tokyo Series last week to kick off the regular season, but today marks the official start of the regular season with 28 of the 30 MLB teams in action. In downtown Indy, the Indianapolis Indians play the first of 75 home games at Victory Field next Tuesday, April 1, against the Iowa Cubs. Top pitching prospect Bubba Chandler will open the season with the Indians but is looking to have a short stay in Triple-A, much like fellow phenom Paul Skenes who began the ā24 campaign with the Indians before starting for the National League in the All-Star Game and winning NL Rookie of the Year honors with the Indiansā parent club Pittsburgh Pirates. Single-game tickets for the Indiansā opening homestand and entire season can be purchased here. ā¾

Voting continued this week for the inaugural Small Town Showdown Bracket Challenge with winners advancing to the Sweet 16. We canāt wait to find out and share the results. Remember, the winning town of the entire challenge gets a $1,000 bar tab at its local dive bar courtesy of Get Indiana. What were some notable results from the opening round? Weāll start with the South Region, where 16th-seeded Nashville took out No. 1 seed Jasper to set up a Round of 32 showdown with Santa Claus. Moving to the North Region, No. 11 Monticello dropped sixth-seeded Tipton and, despite its lower seed, is a favorite to knock off third-seeded Columbia City in the Round of 32. Two words ā Indiana Beach. The East and West Regions mostly held serve with the higher seeds (larger populations), but this is March and upsets are bound to happen. At one point or another, youāve likely found yourself driving counterclockwise around Monument Circle in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Youāve likely even walked around or up the steps to get a closer look at the Soldiers & Sailors Monument, Indianaās official memorial to Hoosiers that served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Frontier Wars and the Spanish-American War. But thereās something inside the monument that you maybe havenāt experienced⦠you can take an elevator for a small donation or climb 330 steps to enjoy its panoramic observatory 231 feet above street level. The very definition of a hidden gem. š

Consider the 2025 NCAA Menās Basketball Tournament Midwest Regional in Indianapolis a win for basketball fans and a big win for the city.
