📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Indiana State and Larry Bird Play for the National Championship (1979)

This week in Indiana history, we celebrate March Madness by talking about one of the greatest Hoosiers to ever play basketball… Larry Bird. In 1979, Bird’s Indiana State Sycamores played the Michigan State Spartans, led by Magic Johnson, in the national championship game.

The Sycamores were unranked in the preseason polls but eventually turned heads and entered the tournament undefeated as the Midwest Region’s No. 1 seed behind Bird’s 30 points per game and first-year coach Bill Hodges.

Though the Sycamores lost in the championship game 75-64, it is credited with increasing overall interest in the NCAA tournament, and Bird and Johnson themselves are credited with revolutionizing today’s NBA. To this day, the 1979 national championship game is the most watched basketball game in American history, drawing 35.1 million viewers.

MLB’s No. 1 Prospect to Start Season in Indianapolis

Two years ago, the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians had pitcher Paul Skenes on their team for six weeks. Since then he’s won the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year and 2025 National League Cy Young awards with the Pittsburgh Pirates, was the starting pitcher for the National League in each of the last two All-Star games, and shut down the star-loaded Dominican Republic lineup for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic a couple weeks ago.

Now, the Indians are set to have another future star on their roster — 19-year-old Konnor Griffin — even if it’s along the same timeline as Skenes. Griffin is the consensus No. 1 prospect in baseball, with ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel writing that he “is the best we’ve seen in a number of years.”

The Indians open the 2026 season this weekend at Victory Field. (Indy Indians)

The Butler Bulldogs men’s basketball program has a new head coach.

On Wednesday, Butler University Vice President and Director of Athletics Grant Leiendecker announced Ronald Nored to the position. Since graduating from Butler in 2012, where he helped the Bulldogs to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA national championship game, Nored has been part of coaching staffs with five NBA teams.

Nored will forever be attached to Butler’s historic runs in the NCAA Tournament under then-head coach Brad Stevens. Now he’ll try to provide more as the program’s leader. (Butler Sports)

🎙 On today's show I sat down with FrancesMary "FM" Loughead, a DePaul graduate who moved from downtown Chicago to Indianapolis in 2021 during COVID, initially living in Bloomington and later Brownsburg, Carmel, and Noblesville.

With no local network and working remotely, FM struggled to make adult friends and began using Bumble BFF, which led her to start a Facebook watch party for The Bachelorette that drew 15–20 women weekly. The group expanded into other events like wine nights and community outings, eventually becoming BFF Indy, officially launched in January 2024 with a 100-person party at The Hangar.

Today, BFF Indy has grown to almost 20,000 members, hosting events such as speed-friending, book swaps, happy hours, weekly walks, and an intergenerational event at a 55+ community, with a mission to provide an affordable, accessible community for women across Indianapolis.
