Welcome to Get Indiana’s Weekly Newsletter
In this week’s newsletter, some Soldiers’ & Sailors’ History, Pizza Pies, & a must-visit Southern Indiana bar.
☀️ This week’s INsights
📊 Stat of the Day: Indiana has 6,862,199 residents, good for 17th in the Union. By 2030, we’re projected to grow to just over 7 million. Indiana had just crossed the 6 million mark in 2000.
👷♂️ This week in 1889, the cornerstone was laid for Indy’s famous Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument. This monument is the official memorial to the Hoosiers who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Frontier Wars, and the Spanish-American War. It now stands 284 feet tall, only 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty. It cost $598,318 in 1902. That’s nearly $20 million today. 💸💸

Yep, we can make some Pies 🍕🍕- Indiana made Yelp’s Top 100 Midwest Pizza Spots list 8 times, in 2024. This included Futuro of Indy, which was just named the 2nd best pizza joint in the Midwest. Futuro was founded in 2021, after making pizzas for family & friends at the beginning of the Covid19 shutdown. If life gives you a Pandemic, make Pies!
And yes, Nate called Futuro Indy’s #1 Pizza spot last November.

The Futuro Classic
Don the Mastodon’s Aunt returns home 🦴- Mastodon bones were once discovered on a farm just south of Angola in 1968. The bones lived at Purdue Fort Wayne, in one form or another, until 2016, when they were sent to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to be studied. Now, Donna is back home in her beautiful custom glass case. Mastadons, frequently found in Indiana, could become the first U.S. national fossil!

🍻 Marengo Tavern - Local bars don’t get any better than this. The Marengo Tavern, located in Marengo (if you couldn’t tell), is known for its killer burgers and friendly atmosphere.

And apparently, trains shake the building when they pass by right behind it. Sounds awesome!
Also, if you’re in the area, check out their first-ever Tavernfest on Saturday, August 31st. Including a beer garden & live music!
