☀️ This week’s INsights

This week in Indiana History - This week in Indiana history, the Indiana General Assembly officially approves the opening of the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute, Indiana. Now, that name probably is not familiar to you, but they later changed it to its modern day name of Indiana State University in 1965.

Early on in it’s existence, the school was known as the “Fighting Teachers.” Though teachers are pretty cool, the name was not intimidating or cool enough for their athletic teams. The students later voted to change the name to the Sycamores, and the name has stuck to this day.

The Sycamores gained national fame in 1979, when their basketball team went 33-0 going into the NCAA National Championship game. French Lick’s own Larry Bird led the Sycamores and eventually became an NBA Hall of Famer. But, the blue and white eventually fell to a very good Michigan State team led by Magic Johnson, who would become one of the greatest point guards to ever play the game of basketball.

I know that the college football playoff is on everyone’s mind with Notre Dame and IU playing each other in South Bend for Round 1, but let’s never forget the miraculous run that the Sycamores went on in 1979, as well as the event that allowed it to happen when it was founded in 1865.

Hoosier Headlines

La Niña is Coming to Town - If you like snow, this might be your type of winter. This year, the La Nina weather pattern has a good chance of affecting our winter. Usually, La Niña brings cooler and wetter conditions to the Midwest. Translation? Get ready for some solid snow days and that damp cold that makes you hate everything.

The experts are saying we could see above-average snowfall, so Hoosiers, it’s time to embrace shoveling as your new winter workout. Temps might swing a bit too—mild some days, then freezing your face off the next. It’s the kind of winter where your car's heater better be working, or you’re gonna suffer.

Bottom line: bundle up, stock up on salt, and prepare for Indiana’s version of “fun” winter weather. La Niña’s here to remind us who’s boss.

Hoosier License Plates - Indiana has a thing with personalized license plates—and not all ideas make the cut. Turns out, the BMV has to reject some wild stuff.

In 2024 alone, 998 plates got axed. The top offender? Fifteen different versions of “Hawk Tuah.” (Yeah, we get it, clever.) Then there were the classics like “IU SUX,” “NDSUX,” and “PUR DUCHE.” College rivalries are alive and well, apparently.

But it gets better—plates like “F WORD,” “ON METH,” and the creatively spelled “AZZH0LE” also didn’t make the grade. Guess some folks are really out here testing the limits.

Moral of the story: Indiana drivers are creative, but maybe not subtle.

 💎 Hidden Gems 💎

The Indianapolis Central Library is a total gem. Built in 1917 with grand Greek Doric columns and Indiana limestone, it’s a historic masterpiece. Then in 2007, they added a sleek glass atrium that makes the place feel like the library got a modern glow-up.

People love it for more than just the books—it’s got stunning downtown views, rows of endless shelves, and a vibe that’s both fancy and welcoming. Plus, it’s ranked one of the most beautiful libraries in the country. Seriously, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to read... or at least pretend to.

Here’s a type of hidden gem you didn’t know we had in Indiana - a watch company. This watch company, with a name that sounds like it fell out of a history book, combines old-world charm with Hoosier ingenuity. Made in Kokomo, they’ve been quietly crafting heirloom-quality timepieces that punch way above their weight.

The brand's roots tie back to a love for both precision and storytelling, making each watch a nod to timeless craftsmanship. Reviewers rave about the attention to detail and the “wow” factor of owning something unique and locally assembled. It’s the kind of find that makes you proud to say, “Yeah, this is from Indiana.”
