📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Crispus Attucks Wins the IHSAA State Championship (1955)

It’s March, and in Indiana, that means one thing — basketball. Today we remember Crispus Attucks High School as the first all-Black high school boys basketball team in the country to win a state championship, led by future Basketball Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson and legendary head coach Ray Crowe.

With Crispus Attucks being an all-Black school, the IHSAA denied its membership until 1942. By the 1950s, Attucks became a powerhouse. They consistently made the final four of the tournament and were perennial contenders.

They defeated Gary Roosevelt in the 1955 state title game to become the first Indianapolis championship team. They are currently immortalized in the Crispus Attucks Museum located inside the high school. In 49 other states, it’s just basketball… but this is Indiana.

👏 3 Big wINs 👏

It took 105 years, but New Haven boys basketball did something no team before it had done — win a regional championship. The Bulldogs (20-7) topped West Lafayette 64-49 to set up a 3A semi-state semifinal showdown with Delta (16-10) on Saturday at the Berry Bowl in Logansport. The winner will play the winner of Columbia City (23-4) and East Chicago Central (15-12) in the semi-state championship.

In Class 1A, Tri-County (16-10) also made history by defeating Fort Wayne Canterbury 44-43 to secure its first regional title in the 55-year history of the program. They’ll face Triton (23-3) in the semi-state semis, and the winner will meet the winner of Monroe Central (21-4) and North Vermillion (16-11) in the semi-state title game.

And in Class 4A, Decatur Central (20-6) also accomplished its first regional title in boys basketball in a 73-60 win over Lawrence Central. They play Mt. Vernon (25-3) in the semi-state semifinals, with the winner facing the winner of New Albany (22-5) and Terre Haute North Vigo (24-3) in the semi-state finals.

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Jonathan Berger, Vice President of Marketing and External Affairs at Newfields, the cultural campus that includes the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Lilly House, the gardens, and Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park.

Berger explains why the 152-acre campus rebranded from "the IMA" to Newfields – rooted in the site's history of Oldfields and the Lilly family's "Newfields" house name – and shares how the institution evolved to feel less intimidating and more like an invitation to experience art and nature.

We discuss Newfields' permanent collection of 42,000 works acquired through purchases, donations, and loans, with only a small percentage on display at any given time.

A major focus is THE LUME, Newfields' immersive, projection-based experience on the fourth floor that has featured Van Gogh, Monet, and Salvador DalĂ, and currently explores contemporary Indigenous Australian artists.

Lastly, Berger covers signature events, including Winterlights, Harvest Nights, and Penrod that drive attendance.
