📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜
WFBM-TV Goes on the Air (1949)
We are still riding the post-race high of the Indy 500, and if you weren’t there in person, at least you could watch it on TV. On that note, we’re looking back on the first television station in the state of Indiana… WFBM-TV.
Originally founded as the first radio station in the state in 1924, it later launched as a television station on May 30, 1949. The first-ever broadcast was a documentary on the Indianapolis 500 called “Crucible of Speed.” The broadcast immediately after? The first-ever live broadcast of the race itself. They had only three cameras set up along the main stretch, pit area and Grandstand E. Earl Townsend, a local trial lawyer, was the primary announcer for the coverage.
Since the 1949 and ‘50 races, the Indy 500 has become subject to local blackouts in the Indianapolis area as there is always a push for locals to attend the race.

Recapping the Closest Indy 500 Ever
After finishing fourth in 2022 and 2025, Felix Rosenqvist raced past David Malukas on the home stretch of Lap 200 to win the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 by the narrowest finish ever on record… .0233 of a second. It was another memorable May moment for Rosenqvist, who welcomed his first-born child, Stella, to the world with his wife, Emille, just two weeks before the race. Check out the full race recap. 🎙 On today's show I sat down with Noblesville Mayor Chris Jensen, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, and Bargersville Town Council President Andrew Greenwood about how their fast-growing central Indiana communities gained national attention and why they formed the Central Indiana Regional Development Authority (CIRDA) to collaborate across 32 municipalities representing about 40% of Indiana's GDP.
They discuss balancing competition and cooperation on issues like economic identity, arts and culture, public safety and gun crime coordination, infrastructure, and fiscal pressures including property tax reforms and rising costs.
Another major focus is data centers, with CIRDA convening utilities, developers, and local officials to establish facts, guardrails, and a regional plan. They also cover housing challenges, preserving community identity amid rapid growth, attracting talent nationally and globally, and advice for aspiring public servants to show up, learn, and pursue long-term vision.
