📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Indianapolis Zoo Opens at White River Park (1988)

This week in Indiana history, the Indianapolis Zoo opened at its current location in White River State Park in 1988. The zoo was one of the largest privately funded zoos in the United States. At 64 acres, the zoo houses more than 1,400 animals and 235 different species.

The zoo also has the distinction of being the only location in the U.S. to receive triple accreditation as a zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden. The aquarium is famous for its bottlenose dolphins, and the adjacent botanical garden has over 50,000 plants and over 5,000 species. 

Perhaps most importantly, the zoo is a leader in conservation and animal research, and gives their biennial Indianapolis Prize to individuals with "extraordinary contributions to conservation efforts.”

Indiana Sports Corp’s vision of central Indiana becoming the women’s sports capital of the world by 2050 is coming to life. The City of Fishers announced Wednesday a major Fishers Fieldhouse development that includes dedicated headquarters and a practice facility for the Indy Ignite, fresh off a record-setting campaign in just their second season in Major League Volleyball.
