📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Siege of Fort Vincennes (1779)

Did you know Indiana played a role in the American Revolution? In the winter of 1779, the frontier settlement of Vincennes was the focus of a dramatic Revolutionary War battle when the British-held Fort Sackville was attacked by the Continental Army. The fort served as a key link between Detroit and the Illinois country. Control of the post meant influence across the western frontier.

The fort was captured by George Rogers Clark, who led the Americans, in 1778. The British then regained control and assumed winter would stop the Americans from taking it back. They were wrong. Clark marched 170 men nearly 180 miles through icy floodwaters all the way to Vincennes. They arrived unexpectedly and laid siege to the fort, relentlessly firing on it for two straight days. The British surrendered on Feb. 25 once they saw no end in sight.

Clark amazingly did this with zero American casualties, and secured control of the region and strengthened the U.S. claims to the Northwest Territory. You can visit this chapter in American history at George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Vincennes, plus so much more highlighted here.
