š This Week in Indiana History š
Who doesnāt love pie? Thanksgiving isnāt the same without it. This article, however, has nothing to do with that but has everything to do with a different kind of āPi.ā
In 1897, Edwin Goodwin, a physician and amateur mathematician, believed he had discovered and perfected a method to square the circle, and that the universally accepted measure of pi, equal to 3.14, was actually 3.2. A bill was passed in the Indiana House of Reps that would make this copyrighted formula fully available in Indiana schools for free, yet other states had to pay. While this would change a lot of the teachings that had been going on for years, some were skeptical.
Thankfully, a Purdue Professor by the name of C.A. Waldo was in Indianapolis. They found Waldo (pause for applause and laughter for that pun) and asked him questions about the method. Waldo vehemently denied that Goodwinās method was proper and that it would change the universally accepted formula for pi. After much ridicule, the Senate voted to shelve the bill indefinitely. Though the bill had zero long term effects, the history behind it was odd enough to where it still is known in Indiana to this day as āThe Indiana Pi Bill.ā

Yesterday was National Women and Girls in Sports Day, and Butler Athletics received its largest single donation to support 12 womenās athletic programs on campus. The pledge was made by Rebecca Graham Paul, a former Bulldogs gymnast who earned two degrees at Butler University. Get Indiana would like to shout out all the women breaking down barriers and reaching new heights in the sports industry. š

We love recognizing Hoosier-based businesses doing big things, and Guardian Bikes out of Seymour fits the bill! A Google commercial set to run during the Super Bowl on Sunday will feature small businesses that use AI, and Guardian Bikes uses Google Workspace, Google Meet and Gemini AI. The bike business started in May 2022 and now makes 2,000 bikes for children per day with an eye on creating adult bikes in the not-so-distant future.

Itās hard to believe 15 years have passed since the Indianapolis Colts appeared in a Super Bowl, but hey, you could always be a fan of the Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, or Jacksonville Jaguars who have, collectively, never appeared in a Super Bowl. This Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs will try to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls, and theyāve got some Hoosier horsepower to make it happen against the Indiana-less Philadelphia Eagles.
When Kansas City is on offense, keep your eyes peeled for running back Carson Steele (Center Grove High School and Ball State University) and tight end Peyton Hendershot (Tri-West High School and Indiana University). When the Chiefsā defense takes aim at quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley, watch out for defensive end George Karlaftis (West Lafayette High School and Purdue University) and linebackers Drue Tranquill (Fort Wayne Carroll High School and Notre Dame University) and Cam Jones (Indiana University).
Go Chiefs? Never thought weād type those words, but here we are! š

š Hidden Gems š
Craig Huse, CEO of Huse Culinary and a recent guest on the Get IN Podcast, mentioned the Story Inn in Brown County as a hidden gem in the Hoosier State. Story Inn is located south of Nashville, Indiana, on a winding road, or, as its homepage says ā in one inconvenient location since 1851. Yes, the Story Inn has been around since the first publication of the New York Daily Times.
Guests can enjoy movie nights on Tuesdays, bingo on Wednesdays, karaoke on Fridays and live music on Saturdays. The Story Inn also has an elite Valentineās Day overnight package for you and your special someone that includes Chefās Showcase Chateaubriand Prix Fixe menu and a wine pairing for dinner.
Located near Surina Square Park in Greenwood, the Greenwood Amphitheater hosts a FREE summer concert series every year. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy musical performances from local artists along with food and beverages from local vendors. Want to pack your own cooler of snacks and non-alcoholic beverages? Go for it! Sorry, we have summer on our mind after the recent surge in temperature (and ignorance of freezing rain in the forecast). š«

The IHSAA wrestling postseason began on Saturday with 32 sectional tournaments taking place across all of Indiana, and regionals are on deck in two days. But last weekend, Lucas Oil Stadium was home to a different kind of wrestling ā WWE Royal Rumble ā and Hoosiers showed up, as expected, by the thousands. A Royal Rumble record 70,347 fans attended the event. Expect more of the same when SummerSlam and WrestleMania make their way to Indianapolis in the future! ā
