📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜
Blizzard of ‘78 (1978)
This week in Indiana history, we look back on one of the most significant weather events to happen in the history of the state — the Blizzard of 1978.
The blizzard walloped the entire state and was at its worst in the north. In South Bend, a whopping 41 inches of snow blanketed the ground, causing Notre Dame to cancel classes for the first time in the university’s history.
The storm also brought 20 inches of snow to Indianapolis, which led to the IHSAA postponing the boys basketball state tournament for 17 days… something unheard of at the time.
Schools were closed for as long as three weeks as the Indiana State Police closed most of the roads in northern Indiana. The Blizzard of ‘78 wasn’t just a snowstorm, it was a moment that brought Indiana life to an absolute halt.
With a major snowstorm looming this weekend, the Blizzard of ‘78 remains the benchmark by which every snowstorm in the Hoosier State is measured.

The unthinkable happened on Monday night when the top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers defeated the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes 27-21 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The turnaround of Indiana football by head coach Curt Cignetti and his staff is simply astonishing. Chew on these notes for a second:
Indiana entered the 2025-26 season with 715 losses all time, most among all college football programs. The Hoosiers didn’t lose this season, becoming the first team in modern college football history to go 16-0.
Before the 2025-26 campaign, Indiana had a 6-116-1 record against AP Top 10 teams. The Hoosiers matched the program’s all-time wins total vs. AP Top 10 teams by going 6-0 this season.
Indiana had never had a Heisman Trophy winner, with running back Anthony Thompson being the closest as runner-up in 1989. Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza etched his name in the record book this year by winning the Heisman Trophy.
Indiana had won just one outright Big Ten championship in program history, doing so in 1945. The Hoosiers defeated then-No. 1 Ohio State 13-10 in this year’s Big Ten title game.
Seriously, we could go on and on and make this entire newsletter about IU football, but we’ll spare you until next fall. Or if you want to keep reading about the Hoosiers and Monday’s thrilling victory, you can do that here.
Looking for a challenge at any of Indiana’s 24 state parks in 2026? Pokagon State Park is home to one of the best with the approximate 8-mile Hell’s Point Challenge.
IN the Parks host Allison Martin shared her experience on the Hell’s Point Challenge, and it sounds like it’s totally worth it. We’re ready to give it a go when the weather turns just a bit! Until then, we’ll stick with Pokagon’s toboggan run.
For the first time in 15 years, O’Brien Park in South Bend is set for major renovations. The park recently landed a $1.7 million upgrade that with include a new splash pad, playground, and more. Full details on the park renovation can be found here.

With temperatures consistently below freezing over the last week, there’s a hidden gem taking shape at 6445 Mimosa Lane in Indianapolis. The Veal family started this seasonal delight back in 1961 and have built it every year since — the Veal’s Ice Tree.
There is no entry fee to enjoy the ice tree, but donations to Wheeler Mission are encouraged to help those who face extreme difficulties during the winter months.
The Southeastern Indiana Veterans Museum is located in Rising Sun and was founded by 25th Infantry Division veteran PG Gentrup, who’s passionate about preserving the history of military veterans. The museum includes collections of veteran uniforms, documents, and military memorabilia, and is free to the public.
