📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜
Wendell Willkie Is Born (1892)
One of the most recognizable politicians of the 1940s was Wendell Willkie, who was born in Elwood, Ind. this week in 1892. Though he never held elected office, his emergence as a dark house candidate in the 1940 presidential election eventually led to his nomination by the Republican Party.
Going against incumbent president Franklin D. Roosevelt who was going for an unprecedented third term, Willkie attracted national attention for his strong support for democracy and international engagement in a time when the country favored a more isolationist approach. A political outsider and former member of the Democratic Party, his nomination was considered a breath of fresh air in comparison to the more “established” candidates.
Though he failed to win, Willkie’s acceptance speech after receiving the nomination was held in his hometown of Elwood, where it became the most attended political event in U.S. history at the time. His legacy is still felt in the town, as well as around the state.

The Lemon Drop
Larry Dickerson was a recent guest on Get IN with Nate Spangle and mentioned The Lemon Drop in Anderson, Ind. as a hidden gem. It’s been around since 1953 and serves up something called “Onion Burgers.” We’re intrigued.
Dominican cuisine + Midwest barbecue sounds like a match made in heaven. Fortunately for Hoosiers, there’s a restaurant in the region that paired the two together perfectly.
