📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Morgan’s Raid (1863)

The year is 1863, and America is smack dab in the middle of the Civil War. Indiana, a Union state, didn’t see much action thankfully. However, this week in Indiana history, we are talking about one of the few times the Confederacy waged war in the Hoosier State.

In an event known as Morgan’s Raid, named after Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, the Confederacy worked its way around Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. The goal of the raid was to frighten the North into demanding its troops return home. Despite initially working, Morgan’s Raid eventually failed.

Not known as a “Civil War State,” Indiana’s role in taking down the raid cannot go unnoticed. The trail (known as the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail) is well marked in both Indiana and Kentucky as a reminder of Indiana’s role in the Civil War.

WNBA All-Star Game team captains Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier drafted 10 players apiece to fill out their respective All-Star teams on Tuesday night. Unsurprisingly, Clark selected Indiana Fever teammate Aliyah Boston as one of her four starters alongside Sabrina Ionescu (New York Liberty), A’Ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces) and Satou Sabally (Phoenix Mercury).

Clark’s six-player bench also includes Kelsey Mitchell, giving Team Clark three Fever stars in front of what will be a mostly Fever crowd.

Downtown Indianapolis and Gainbridge Fieldhouse will be buzzing with WNBA All-Star festivities next week, including the 3-point challenge and skills contest starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 18, and the WNBA All-Star Game at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 19. 🏀

We’re headed to east central Indiana for this week’s hidden gems. First up is 5 Arch Brewing Co. located in the heart of Centerville. If you’re traveling US-40 and in need of a place to stop, look no further.

5 Arch has a rotating lineup of IPAs, stouts, lagers and sours, headlined by the 5 Arch e* Amber Ale — the first beer Brewmaster Scott ever made. 5 Arch also does it right with its food menu. Nothing fancy, with pretzel bites, pizza, and sandwiches as its staples. You’ll have room for a second bevvy if you’d like.

Next time you’re passing through the land of the Bulldogs, stretch your legs, hop into 5 Arch, and enjoy another Indiana hidden gem. 🍻

Not quite as close to the Indiana-Ohio border but just as much of a hidden gem as 5 Arch Brewing Co. is Temptations Restaurant off State Road 3 in New Castle.

Temptations has been serving locals comfort food since 2010, including its famous meatloaf on Tuesdays and spread of desserts that come with every meal. Chicken Pot Pies are served up on Wednesdays, Country Fried Chicken with Gravy is the Thursday headliner, and Fried Pork Chops lead you into the weekend on Fridays.

We’re stuffed just thinking about it.

Finally… finally… there’s a speed limit increase in effect on most of the I-465 loop around Indianapolis.

While state troopers rarely pulled drivers over for going 10 mph over when the speed limit was 55 or sometimes would blow by you even when you were doing 10-15 over the law, it was still the thought, “How can this entire loop possibly have a speed limit of 55 when nobody is going 55?”

Apparently Indiana lawmakers felt the same, and the new speed limit to 65 mph around the loop went into effect on July 1 (excluding a short portion on the northwest side and a large portion still under construction).

Drive safely, drive responsibly, and don’t worry about going 65 on 465 anymore because that’s the new limit!
