📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Indiana State Quarter is Released by the U.S. Mint (2002)

This week in Indiana history we are talking about the Indiana State Quarter, which was released by the U.S. Mint on August 2, 2002. The quarter was part of the “50 State Quarters” program created by the U.S. Mint.

Created in 1999, and going until 2008, the 50 State Quarters program was designed to create commemorative quarters representing each U.S. State. They released the quarters based off of when each state was admitted into the Union, with Delaware being the first. Because of this, Indiana was the 19th state to have its coin minted.

Though it does not have a basketball on it, Indiana does have both an IndyCar (yes, actually) and 19 stars to represent Indiana being the 19th state in the Union. It also has the state motto “Crossroads of America” on it.

Hoosier Headlines

Bourbon, Indiana was hit by a tornado in early April that had winds estimated at 105 mph, leading to significant damage in the community. Nate acted right away, rallying behind his hometown and raising over $28,000 to help with recovery.

Later today, the Get IN team will be at Journey’s End in Bourbon from 6-8 p.m., and St. Elmo will be there with the crew sampling Rare Saint bourbon and its famous shrimp cocktail!

If you donated to the cause, stop by to pick up your Bourbon 4 Bourbon Rare Saint bottle!

The 2025 Indiana State Fair returns to Indianapolis from August 1-17 (closed on Mondays), and we’ve got your complete guide to ensure you do it right. Whether this is your first visit or an annual tradition, there’s so much going on at the fair that it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

From deep-fried you name it to dozens of free attractions, this year’s state fair is the soundtrack of Indiana’s summer. Don’t miss it! 🎡

The last couple months have been hot to say the least, so while we’re thinking about being in the dog days of summer, we’ve compiled a list of attractions, parks, and lodges across the Hoosier State that are pet-friendly.

So, where exactly can you give belly scratches to your furry friend without pinning your ears back? Find out here.

This might be the most important event your teen goes to all summer.

On Saturday, August 2, Rule the Road is bringing together driving instructors, IndyCar pros, and community partners for a full day of skill-building in Indianapolis. They’re helping teens learn how to handle the road — beyond just passing a test.

There’ll be autograph sessions with real IndyCar drivers, local mascots, and plenty of moments to turn learning into something memorable.

Pizza Places in Evansville 🍕

We recently had Bryan Smith, Master Distiller/Owner of Hard Truth, on the Get IN. Podcast, and he reeled off a half-dozen pizza joints in Evansville that serve up some delicious pies.

Steve’s Una Pizza. Spankey’s Una Pizza. Covert Una Pizza. Una Tu Pizza. Roca Bar. Turoni’s. Which one was his favorite and why? See below and find out.

When exploring Indiana, you can walk, bike, swim, boat, kayak, fly, and… railbike? Yep, that’s right — you can venture through Noblesville on one of its three railbike tour routes. This unique way of exploring Hamilton County is one you certainly won’t forget.

So, ignore that pothole you just hit when reading this newsletter (put your phone down, actually) and give it up for Indiana being the best in something we never dreamed possible.
