Corydon Becomes the Capital of the Indiana Territory (1816)

This week in Indiana history, we celebrate the first state capital of Indiana. We are here to talk about the city of Corydon.

Corydon is located in southern Indiana just north of the Kentucky state line. It currently has just over 3,000 people that live there and is known around the state as the first capital of Indiana. Though technically the second capital of Indiana (the first capital was Vincennes when Indiana was a territory), Corydon was the site of the first Indiana Constitutional Convention and was the capital when Indiana became an official state in 1816.

Corydon remained the capital until 1825 when it was permanently moved to Indianapolis. Though it is no longer the capital of Indiana, Corydon is still very important to the long-term history of Indiana and will forever be remembered as its first capital.

Hoosier Headlines

The Indiana Pacers advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals in the most thrilling of fashions on Tuesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, knocking off the Milwaukee Bucks 119-118 in overtime to win the best-of-seven series, 4-1. Tyrese Haliburton took over in crunch time, knocking down two free throws before burying a game-tying dunk with 10 seconds to play to force overtime. In the extra period, Haliburton — who was voted the most overrated player in an anonymous NBA player poll posted by The Athletic (LOL at that, by the way) — hit a triple to put the Pacers up early and saved his best for last, converting an and-1 that pulled Indiana to within one before blowing by Giannis Antetokounmpo for a game-winning layup with 1.3 seconds on the clock. The Pacers trailed by seven with 40 seconds left and reeled off the last eight points of the contest to send the Bucks vacationing for a second consecutive season. Overrate that. Next up for the Pacers? The Eastern Conference No. 1 seed Cleveland Cavaliers, who swept the Miami Heat in the first round, including a 55-point win the sweep-clincher. Fwiw, the Pacers won the regular-season series 3 games to 1. 🏀

The theme for this year’s Indiana State Fair was revealed this week as “The Soundtrack of Summer.” From farm equipment and animals to Midway rides and live music, the sounds of the fair blend together to form the overall theme. This year’s fair is set for Aug. 1-17. More information can be found at indianastatefair.com.

#IsItMayYet? Checks calendar… it is! It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Indianapolis, when all eyes go toward the speedway and the happenings taking place leading up to race day on May 25. Earlier this week, IMS revealed the Official Pace Car for the 500 — a 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. drove the pace car last year, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan will handle those duties later this month. 🏁🏈

We teamed up with our friends at Connect 574 to sponsor the 2025 Pizza Bracket. The winner? Hop Station in Mishawaka. You can’t go wrong with any of its flavorful, wonderfully named ‘zas, including the “I Got That (Chicago) Dog In Me,” “The Philly Special” and the “Nashville Hot Chicken Pizza Vol. 2,” among many others. Top off your eats with an endless list of draft beers and some skee-ball. 🍕🍺

The 18-hole Speedway Golf Course first opened in 1929 with nine holes outside the track and nine in the speedway infield. In the mid-1960s, another nine holes were added outside the track and the course remained that way until 1992 when Pete Dye redesigned the facility with a renaming to Brickyard Crossing Golf Course featuring 14 holes east of the backstretch and four in the infield. We recently played Brickyard Crossing and had a blast while IndyCars zoomed by on Open Test Day. The course is in tip-top condition and is a bucket lister for golfers and those who want to experience a course unlike any other. 🏌️⛳️

As we predicted in last week’s newsletter, the Indianapolis Colts drafted tight end Tyler Warren with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Despite being the second tight end off the board, many believe Warren is the gem of all rookie tight ends. He finished his collegiate career at Penn State with 25 total touchdowns (19 receiving, six rushing) and won the John Mackey Award following a standout senior campaign that also saw him finish seventh in Heisman Trophy voting. Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones now have another offensive weapon to go with Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman, Alec Pierce and Josh Downs. Defenses beware. 🏈
