📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Orville Redenbacher Is Born (1907)

One of the most well-known Hoosiers was born on July 16, 1907. Orville Redenbacher was born in the farm house he grew up in just seven miles south of Brazil in Clay County, and later gained fame for his Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Popping Corn. He was also known for starring in almost every Redenbacher popcorn commercial until he passed away in 1995.

Redenbacher attended Purdue University, where he earned a Purdue Agriculture Bachelor’s degree in agronomy in 1928. Not only did he become a businessman, but Redenbacher was also a food scientist. He revolutionized the popcorn industry by creating a popcorn hybrid that allowed for kernels to pop significantly larger, and left almost no unpopped kernels in a bag. 

Nowadays, Redenbacher’s legacy carries on every year in Valparaiso. A statue of Redenbacher sitting on a bench was unveiled in 2012, and he is remembered annually during the Valparaiso Popcorn Festival in September.

One of CFB’s Oldest Rivalries to be Played at Ball State

Last Friday at 10 a.m., Get IN. Sports broke the news that the 2026 Monon Bell Classic between the DePauw Tigers and Wabash Little Giants will be played on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Scheumann Stadium on the campus of Ball State University. Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston to Play Against Fever Teammate Kelsey Mitchell in WNBA All-Star Game

Honorary general managers and former WNBA stars Cynthia Cooper and Teresa Weatherspoon each drafted their respective WNBA All-Star teams on Wednesday night. The draft results put Clark and Boston on Cooper’s team, while Mitchell was selected to Weatherspoon’s team. The game is next Saturday, July 25, at 8:30 p.m. ET, and will be aired nationally on ABC. WAMMfest Returns to Greenwood on August 15

Max Clark was a 2023 graduate of Franklin Community High School in Indiana and was selected third overall by the Detroit Tigers in that summer’s MLB Draft. The three-time Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year and the ‘23 National Player of the Year has lived up to his massive hype in the pros, ascending to Triple-A at just 21 years old.

One of the coolest moments of Clark’s pro career happened last week at Victory Field in Indianapolis, where he homered in his first at-bat with the Toledo Mud Hens and put on a show for family, friends, former teammates, and many young admirers in attendance. Watch the home run below and listen to Clark’s supporting cast… remember, he was playing for the visiting team!

Indiana has rich baseball history, with former greats like Don Mattingly, Scott Rolen, Carl Erskine, and Kenny Lofton, and more recent players like Tucker Barnhart and Lance Lynn leaving their mark in the major leagues.

🎧 He Bought a Boat Dealership Doing $375K… Now It Does $23M 🎧

🎙 On today's show I sat down with J Hurless, co-owner of Indiana boating dealership and service company Reeder Trausch Marine.

Hurless shares how he dropped out of high school, built a sales and leadership career at Ray Skillman until age 28, then bought Reeder Trausch in 2018 with little marine experience.

The dealership had been a steady family business selling eight boats a year ($375K in 2017), and Hurless faced immediate challenges including a drained lake, limited working capital, and no floor-plan credit. By cleaning up the business, launching a website, hustling on Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace, engaging the Rockville community, and securing manufacturer-backed lending, the company grew rapidly to $1.2M in 2018 and $23M by 2023, later acquiring Denny's Marina in 2024.

Hurless also emphasizes building teams, training talent, embracing change, and resilience through setbacks.
