📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜
Garfield Debuts Nationwide (1978)
One of the most famous Hoosiers received nationwide attention on this date in 1978. I’m not talking about a human though… I’m talking about Garfield! On this date in Indiana History, we celebrate our favorite Monday-hating, lasagna-loving cat, who appeared in 41 newspapers across the country when he debuted.
Created by Jim Davis of Muncie, Indiana, Garfield became one of the most recognizable cartoon characters on the planet. Today, it is in 2,800 newspapers daily and is estimated to be read by 300 million readers. It has also extended out to TV shows, movies, and holiday specials.
If you’re traveling just north of Indianapolis, there are multiple Garfield statues. As much of a curmudgeon that Garfield is, this state loves him and is very proud he’s a fellow Hoosier.

Pacers Face Thunder Tonight in Must-Win Game 6 🏀
The Indiana Pacers’ backs are against the wall. The good news? This team seems to find a new gear when there are doubters (looking at you, Stephen A. Smith). Game 6 tips tonight at 8:30 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. So, how’d the best-of-seven series get to this point?
Rewind to last Friday and a pivotal Game 4 that slipped away for the ‘Cers in the fourth quarter of a 111-104 loss. Indiana was in command for much of the game, but the Thunder hung around and finished on a 12-1 run in the final minutes to even the series. (Check out the video below to see our Game 4 experience in the Gainbridge suite)
Game 5 was Monday in OKC, where the Thunder held serve 120-109. Jalen Williams scored a playoff career-high 40 points, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 31 points and 10 assists to spark the home team. Indiana trailed by 10-15 points for most of the contest and closed the deficit to 95-93 with just over 8 minutes to play, but the Thunder pulled away to grab a 3-2 series lead. Pascal Siakam (28 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) and T.J. McConnell (18 points) led the way for Indiana.
The Pacers’ job now? Win tonight, send the series back to OKC for a winner-take-all Game 7, and take a crack at history. YES ’CERS.

💎 Hidden Gems 💎
If you find yourself in Greene County near the unincorporated towns of Solsberry and Tulip, go off the beaten path and check out the Tulip Trestle, a towering railroad bridge completed in December 1906. Also known as the Tulip Viaduct, the bridge is 2,307 feet long and 157 feet tall.
When it was built, it was the longest railroad trestle in the United States and third-longest in the world. Although passenger trains traveled the track until 1948, the trestle today is only used by Indiana Railroad freight trains. Nevertheless, amazing it’s still in operation.
For history buffs, photographers and travelers, the trestle is a must-see landmark. Trust us, we’ve seen it — it’s truly a stunning piece of engineering excellence.

Located in the small town of Middlebury in Elkhart County is Wedgewood Brewing Co. The 21+ brewpub combines craft beer and delicious bites with live music for an entertaining atmosphere.
The menu has something for everyone. We recommend the Roadhouse Smash (a smashburger done right), Nashville Hot Chicken or Chicken Bacon Ranch Pita. Its rotating tap list includes lagers, IPAs and seasonal varieties. Cheers to what could become your new favorite hidden gem hangout. 🍻

Two words for you: Sophie Cunningham.
Playing in her first campaign with the Indiana Fever after spending the first six seasons of her career with the Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham showed the WNBA she’s not playing around in protecting Caitlin Clark… should opposing players take any cheap shots at the second-year sensation. That’s what happened Tuesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
With Clark on the bench in the final seconds of an 88-71 win for the Fever over the Connecticut Sun, Cunningham wrapped her arms around the Sun’s Jacy Sheldon who was going in for a layup and took her to the floor. A scuffle ensued, and Cunningham and Sheldon, along with Sun teammate Lindsay Allen, were given Flagrant 2 fouls and ejected.
So, what sparked Cunningham’s aggression? Rewind to late in the third quarter, when Sheldon — Clark’s primary defender all game long — got overly aggressive and poked Clark in the eye. Visibly frustrated, Clark turned to Sheldon after the whistle and the two bumped together. After a Clark shove, Connecticut's Marina Mabrey blindsided Clark with a hip check that sent her to the floor.
Boos rained down during the official review that lasted over five minutes, but the outcome of the review ultimately led to what happened in the final seconds of the game. Sheldon’s foul of Clark was upgraded to a Flagrant 1, Clark and the Sun’s Tina Charles were assessed double technical fouls, and Mabrey’s malicious play was ruled a technical as well, allowing her to remain in the game.
The WNBA righted the officiating crew’s wrong yesterday by upgrading Mabrey’s technical to a Flagrant 2, which would have been an ejection on Tuesday night. No going back on it now, but the damage was already done.
With the dust settled two days later, one thing remains: Sophie Cunningham has Clark’s back, and that bodes well for the Fever going forward.
The chippiness continues at the end of Fever-Sun 😳
