📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜
Death of Martin Luther King Jr. (1968)
This week in Indiana History, we revisit the death of Martin Luther King Jr. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., but there’s a very specific reason as to why this event is connected to Indiana.
When Martin Luther King was assassinated, Robert Kennedy was running for President. The evening of the shooting, Kennedy was in Indianapolis campaigning and gave an impromptu speech where he called for racial equality and reconciliation between blacks and whites.
As a result of King’s assassination, riots broke out in over 60 cities across the United States… but not in Indianapolis. Many credit Kennedy’s speech as a reason for this, and we are grateful that he impacted our state in such a way.

⚡ Hoosier Headlines ⚡
Before you scroll the rest of this week’s newsletter, we want to extend our thoughts to everyone affected by last night’s storm that passed through Indiana causing destruction in Brownsburg, Carmel, Bourbon and many other Hoosier communities. If you know of any businesses affected, let us know here and we’ll give our Get Indiana best to spread the message to help them back on their feet.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway just keeps getting better and better ahead of the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500. Yesterday, after 18 months of closure, IMS reopened its museum to the public following the completion of a $60.5 million renovation.
With an additional 40,000 square feet of space, guests can enjoy galleries, four-time Indy 500 winner exhibits, interactive elements, educational components and more. Is it race day yet? 🏁🏎

Major construction will soon take place at the Circle Centre Mall which has been in the heart of downtown Indianapolis since 1995. It will be redeveloped by Hendricks Commercial Properties over the next several years to provide additional housing and storefront property to the Circle City. The north concourse that contains the food court will remain open for the near future, so take a trip down memory lane and savor some fast food grub before it’s gone for good.

💎 Hidden Gems 💎
For a second straight week, we’re revealing a downtown Indy hidden gem to you that requires you to go to the top. The War Memorial Plaza located north of Monument Circle has 14 memorials that honor those who died protecting our country, and the Indiana War Memorial is at the center of it all. When you’re inside, take the narrow staircase to the top into the Shrine Room, which was dedicated on Armistice Day in 1933 with the hope of inspiring citizenship in all who pass through. 🇺🇸

In the small town of Lapel, Indiana, pop in to Pax Verum Brewery where they host live music on Fridays and food trucks on Saturdays throughout the summer while serving up lagers, hazy and West Coast hoppy beers.

👏 4 Big wINs 👏
The 2025 IHSAA Boys Basketball State Finals were held this past Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and all four games were decided by a total of just 19 points. That margin is the lowest points differential since the IHSAA changed to a multiple class format for basketball in 1998. In 1A, Orleans took down Clinton Prairie 64-55 for the school’s first state championship in any sport, Manchester dropped University 59-54 in the 2A final, and South Bend St. Joseph held off Crispus Attucks 56-52 for the 3A crown. The boys basketball titles were the first in school history for both Manchester and South Bend St. Joseph. The best was saved for last, with the 4A championship between Fishers and Jeffersonville going to overtime and the Red Devils of Jeffersonville prevailing, 67-66. It sealed the school’s second boys basketball championship and first since 1993, and the win also ended Fishers’ perfect season and 43-game win streak. 🏀🏆
