Rear View Mirror Helps Ray Harroun Win the First Indy 500 (1911)
With this yearās edition of the 500 in the rear view mirror, we turn our attention for This Week in Indiana History back to the very first running of the Indianapolis 500, which took place on May 30, 1911.
The winner? Ray Harroun, who came out of retirement and became the first known driver to mount a rear view mirror to a race car, claimed victory and a $14,250 prize ($479,700 in 2025 dollars) from a $27,550 purse ($927,418 in 2025 dollars). Race cars back then had a second person riding along as a spotter, and the rear view mirror eliminated Harrounās need for the extra set of eyes, helping reduce the weight of the vehicle considerably.
Harroun drove a Marmon āWaspā en route to victory lane, one of the 40 cars entered in the 500-mile race, and his average speed of 74.602 mph had him finish in 6 hours, 42 minutes and 8 seconds. š

Winning in the postseason often requires your stars to shine bright, and Tyrese Haliburton ā the face of the Indiana Pacers ā did just that in Tuesday nightās 130-121 Game 4 win over the New York Knicks to give the āCers a 3-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference Finals. Haliburton finished with a game-high 32 points, 15 assists (nearly matching the Knicksā 17 as a team), 12 rebounds and no turnovers. No player had gone 30/15/10/0 in a playoff game until Tyreseās latest act. Game 5 is set for 8 ET tonight at Madison Square Garden on TNT, with the series potentially returning to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for Game 6 on Saturday. That said, letās finish it tonight. š
With Indianapolis at the center of the sports world last week with the Pacersā postseason run, everything surrounding Caitlin Clarkās leg injury and the Fever, and Hoosiers gearing up for the 500, the Irsay family and Indianapolis Colts suffered a significant loss with the passing of Colts Owner and CEO Jim Irsay. He loved the Colts and the game of football, and his work in the community and beyond further cements the legacy he leaves behind. The Colts added this page to their official team site, complete with a tribute video, feature story and comments shared by fans, organizations and teams on whose Jimās life touched, no matter how big or small. RIP, Mr. Irsay.
Already with Grand Park in its back pocket and other development projects in the works, Westfield now has plans for a $100 million development to further enhance its downtown district. The proposed plan includes 43,000 square feet of retail space, 15,500 square feet of office space, an art plaza, parking garage, housing, and the possibility of a two-story, high-end restaurant. Think Mass Ave, Broad Ripple, or for those familiar with fellow north-of-Indy āburb Carmel and its Main Street vibes, that.

If you canāt make it to Indianapolis, Fort Wayne is home to Science Central which provides a full STEM learning experience for kids to be entertained.
