Winchester was named the county seat that same year when five of the settlers donated land.
It was named for Winchester, Va.
Randolph County was an important part of the Underground Railroad and was home to three distinct settlements of free African-Americans.
In the 1880s and 90s, oil and natural gas were discovered in the county, and Winchester became dominated by the glass industry.
🏥 MAIN INDUSTRIES: Manufacturing, Healthcare

Wick’s Pies is a major producer of pies and pie shells, too. Learn more about it below the Indiana map.
Ascension St. Vincent Randolph is in Winchester and delivers primary care and specialty care, including women’s health, urgent care and emergency services. They also offer minimally invasive procedures, in-patient care, imaging, lab tests and rehabilitation services.

Mrs. Wick’s Restaurant opened in the mid-1980s in honor of Duane “Wick” Wickersham’s supportive wife, Ruby. Today, the full-service bakery and cafe is open Tuesday through Saturday, making 36 varieties of pie each day and serving breakfast all day. You can also take home legendary Mrs. Wick’s pot pies, pie shells or unbaked frozen pies.
The entire Wick’s Pies operation goes back to Duane’s opening of The Rainbow Restaurant in downtown Winchester in the mid-1940s. There, he used his grandmother’s recipes to sell pies, and they were such a hit that he was producing and selling 300 pies per day after just four years. Then in 1961, he purchased a building in town that today is home to the production of 10,000 pies and over 30,000 pie shells in an 8-hour shift. Mr. Wickersham was a highly successful entrepreneur, to say the least.
